Magpie Journals #13: Happy Audio Drama Autumn!
Hello everyone! I am writing to you from Lost Evenings VII in Toronto, Canada. We chose not to explore downtown this time around because we have family nearby. We can easily take more dedicated time at a later date. However, I did find a place called Pirates of Coffee that has non-blob-level latte art. They have a passion for coffee I have only seen when attending a US Coffee Competition. It was incredible.
I also will have a write-up soon for a live podcast recording I attended while here at Lost Evenings. Moderated by Sarah Burke from Women in Media, it was a truly incredible and poignant conversation. More on that later, but I'm super excited about it.
I am a week behind on this announcement because I vastly underestimated how busy I would be in these past two weeks. I am starting Audio Drama Autumn here at Magpie! I am going to take a few months to intentionally explore audio fiction.
Why? If I'm going to critique this medium, I need to explore in as many directions as possible. Audio fiction in particular is very daunting to me. One, there are a ton of great places covering the genre like Audio Drama Reviews, Tea in the Sahara, and The Audio Drama Gazette. I want to express that they have it covered and regular listeners know I try to shout them out often. Two, fiction requires a different type of focus from me in my listening. I want to give my readers a taste of the genre in my voice, challenge myself, and explore different ways audio can be used. I love alliteration, and I listen to audio drama more when the air crisps, so let's see what happens.
I'll be starting this week and continuing until around December 22nd or so. My goal is to cover two in October and November because I don't want to say no to anything great that might come to my attention in the meantime.
I hope everyone likes this folding in, and finds a new podcast. Now, off to listen to more great music at Lost Evenings. Remember to subscribe for monthly updates so you don't have to track me down on social media!
