Slant Recommendation: Space Meet Art

By day, I work in theater. If you believe it, I can say I have used the Pythagorean theorem in my real life - math teachers everywhere may rejoice. It wasn’t just a thought experiment to torture teenagers. I actually used it.

With that being said, I could wax poetic about how STEM is prioritized over arts when really the two need to go hand in hand. You need to be able to dream about possibilities to make advancement. We need science to be able to calculate how much load something can bear when building a set. We need science to push the boundaries of arts technology. We need science and math to produce the art we see every day. You need to be able to connect with other humans to collaborate and build off of each other.

We need art and science to work together for a better future. It’s not one or the other.

This is a podcast pairing of an episode and a series. I wanted to put these two together to really get you thinking about how art and science can, has, and does interact with each other. I hope you enjoy it, and let me know if you have a pairing like this.

Podcast Episode: Critics at Large “Is Science Fiction the New Realism?”

This podcast overall is one of my favorites to dip in and out of. Don’t be afraid to scroll through a podcast to find the episodes you might like. In particular, I haven’t watched Dune but I do love thinking about science fiction in general.

This episode has professional critics from The New York Post discussing the new thresholds of science fiction, and where science fiction and reality blurs. It is fascinating to consider, even if you aren’t deep into science fiction. Plot twist, I am not.

Podcast Series Moonrise

I reviewed this one a while back, which you can read here. An older podcast that stands up to 2024 about the space race, and notably about how science fiction inspired many of the scientists who made going to the moon possible.

As we step into the second space race, I think it’s fascinating to get a slightly different perspective of a story we all think we know so well. If you’ve followed me for long enough, you know I have a love for space and the possibilities of the future. Call me a dreamer.
