Slant Recommendation Sunday: The Good Animal People

Slant Recommendation Sunday: The Good Animal People

Hello and welcome to another iteration of Slant Recommendation Sunday. Where I am tortured by spelling the word “recommendation” over and over, and you get two podcasts that I think pair nicely together.

The qualifications for these pairings may appear to water down to “vibes” but I think it’s important to say that something more than vibes will always connect episodes or shows I recommend here. They pair up like side quests with a main storyline, or when you accidentally discover that you love the way a Nutty Buddy tastes while drinking your morning coffee. These things aren’t normally thought about as anything more than fleetingly connected, but it is fascinating to explore how they do.

This week’s is a fun, accident type pairing. Sometimes these come because I'm on a mission to go down a rabbit hole. Sometimes, they are happy accidents. For this pairing: One episode I listened to late at night, winding down after a long day. The other was released the next morning and I listened because the description fascinated me.

Let’s see what they are!

Stuff You Should Know - Jane Goodall: All Good

A delightful episode about Jane Goodall. This isn’t the best episode by SYSK when it comes to timeline adherence, but you can tell that the hosts enjoy Goodall’s story, her work, and what she means as an icon. It makes it a joy to listen to, but compared to a few SYSK episodes I’ve listened to, you’ll probably have to be more active in listening.

Critics at Large: The Changing World of Nature Documentaries

This episode is examining the rise of nature documentaries in popular culture right now. Our hosts explain the history of the nature documentary, and how you can follow Sir David Attenboroguh to see how these pieces of art have changed since the 1950s. We have a fascinating cultural phenomenon happening with a “gold rush of nature documentaries”. Why? Well, listen to this episode to find out some of the reasons. One may or may not be related to cannabis.

Episode: The Changing World of Nature Documentaries, published July 11th, 2024.

*this episode didn't load nicely in Epsiodes.fm for some reason. It's in the feeds though! I promise!

If you’re worried about how these might make you feel about climate anxiety, I didn’t really get that from these episodes. If anything, they were a reminder that doom is not productive. If you truly suffer from climate anxiety, check out Pique Action. This publication has helped me a lot!
